Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red'
Greenhouses Farm Market
Featuring colorful, contorted foliage and a compact habit, 'Curly Red' is one the most distinctive and ornamental cultivars of drooping leucothoe, an evergreen shrub from the Southeast United States. The smooth, purple-flushed green stems are densely furnished with curled, puckered leaves that are significantly smaller than normal. The leaves are red and purple when new, mature to dark green in summer, and turn burgundy and bronze in fall. This non-blooming cultivar slowly forms a rounded, calf-high shrub.
Grow 'Curly Red' in cool, moist, acidic soil and light to full shade. Shelter it from cold winter winds. It is good as a foundation or patio plant, and is well suited for containers.
