Astilbe Thunbergii ‘Ostrich Plume’ (Straussenfeder), Tall Japanese Astilbe, Zones 3-8
This Astilbe thunbergii hybrid is truly unique in the crowded world of astilbes. The clumps of lacy, green, basal foliage are topped in mid-spring with well-branched 3' tall panicles of pink flowers with cascading side shoots that give a wonderful weeping effect. Very elegant and quite different than typical Astilbe flowers. Beautiful near a water feature but also thrives in tubs and mixed containers.
It is placed in the Thunbergii hybrid group, which are generally tall varieties (to 4’) which bloom late and feature arching, loosely-branched flower panicles and ovate to lance-shaped, 2-ternate leaves.
